Mobile applications are not websites. Not everyone will need the capabilities that an iPhone, iPad or Android device have to offer. Coming from a mobile application development company, this might sound counterproductive for us to say, but we’re just being honest. If you can do what you want to do in a website, why develop or use a separate app?
Still want your content in an iPhone app? You can create a link to your mobile-friendly website right on your device’s home screen. On the iPhone or iPad, it’s very easy and you can even have a favicon-like icon for your website’s shortcut. Here’s how to put a shortcut on your iOS’s home screen:
Navigate to your favorite website on your iOS device.
Touch the + button at the bottom of the browser to bring up the add bookmark screen.
Rename the icon to what you want and it’ll show up on your iPhone or iPad.
Click “Add,” and you now have the website or web app as an icon on your iOS device’s screen.
You can also get a custom icon when users bookmark your site since the default is simply a mini screenshot of your site. Just create a simple image, name it apple-touch-icon.png and put it in your website’s root directory. For this site, we’ve used a 129×129 pixel file, but almost any size will work.
If you’d rather use another file name, put your icon in another location or remove the gloss effect, you can use these:
<link rel="apple-touch-icon" href="/images/ios-icon.png" />
<link rel="apple-touch-icon-precomposed" href="/apple-touch-icon-no-gloss.png" />
Use this for your own website or web app. If this is all you need, there’s no reason to develop a separate app! However, if you need more capabilities, feel free to get in touch with us on developing your feature rich mobile or web application. See our current products for examples of our work. Also, if you’d like more information on creating a custom icon for when users bookmark your website, feel free to contact us and we’ll get you started.
